FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. -- Fernandina Beach police said they've arrested an elderly woman's grandson and his wife, who are accused of abusing and neglecting the 94-year-old woman, which led to her death.Where was this elderly woman staying for her last month on earth? The suffering had to horrible.
Police said Betty Johnson was found unresponsive Friday in a home in the 1000 block of South 10th Street. Rescuers said Johnson was severely dehydrated, and she was taken to a hospital, where she later died.
Police said Johnson had numerous pressure sores across her body that were consistent with a person being in the same position for a long period of time. Police said her injuries were a result of severe neglect.
Police said Johnson had been seated in a beach-style chair, day and night, for more than a month without proper care. They said she could only walk with a walker and needed help getting up and down. Police said Johnson lived in a room with the chair and a small TV, and the suspects told them they helped her up and down to get to the bathroom.
"She was immobile. She wasn't able to get up on her own," Capt. David Bishop said. "They would've had to help her or get her out and about or get somebody to help to get her medical treatment."
Investigators said both subjects were aware of her injuries and purposely neglected to seek any care or medical help to assist them with her injuries and sores. SOURCE
