JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The idea that University of North Florida professor Parvez Ahmed, a Muslim who headed up a national Islamic group, could serve a role in Jacksonville government has set off shock waves at City Hall.

The fuss started last week with controversial questions a city council member had for Ahmed concerning his nomination to serve on the Human Rights Commission.
It is slow infiltration. Once again Mayor (More Fees) Peyton is as clueless on this as he is on the numerous fees and rate hikes on fees. He seems to to think everyone in Jacksonville has very deep pockets and all are completely stupid. That is a story for another time.
Citizen Randy McDaniels sent council members a report that he said shows Ahmed's past position on the Islamic board in which he supported funding for terrorism.
"So he is not the civil rights leader you guys think he is and has no right sitting on the Jacksonville Human Rights Commission," McDaniels said.
Others dispute those findings and say the organization promotes acceptance and not terrorism.
Several people said they were worried because they believe Ahmed's appointment is just the first step.
"We are fighting a war on infiltration," citizen Mary Downey told the council.
Ahmed was at this week's council meeting but left before the public comments. News4JAX
